Project: Gonzalo Montiel Room. LA NAU. Universidad de Valencia Date: October 2016 Place: Valencia In conjunction with: Estudio Gallén Ibáñez
Placed in “La Nau”, the historic headquarters of Valencia University. This room dates back to the end of the XV century, as most of this building was rebuilt, after the bombardment from Napoleon’s troops in 1812. This building reconstruction from a very damaged building, was slowly carried out through the whole of the XIX through slowly along all XIX century.
In the past, the room has been a law library, but nowadays it is a multi-use space which is used in several diferent ways like for meetings, press conferences or workshops.
For all this, our proposal is made up of the design of a “multitable”, that allows the big table to appear to be and is (610cm x 138cm) to break up into other smaller parts, that are used depending on the activity that is going to happen in each moment. The “multitable” has been designed with a variable geometry, making it possible to turn into different shapes, each part working by itself and in combination with the rest providing harmony and serenity to the space in addition to its own function.
This fragmentation is always visible, so as to make the union clear between all the pieces, there is ever a vertical shift of one of the horizontal sides, which allows the work surfaces to be illuminated, which brings movement to the room which makes close by up for the stiffness of the architecture from another era.
Does space define the object or is it viceversa, that the object or objects and their inter-relation manage to define a space on the edge of the perimeter that is determined by the surrounding walls?
It is the space that contains the object, but not that it defines it, more the other way around, it is the objects with their proportion and order that end up defining the space and its use.
Now it is not the same if one of these perimeter walls is made of glass, like in this case, where there is a visual inter-relation with other spaces that are for away from the specific place that awards it with a certain personality that is on show, that is strong thered ever more by the elevation that exists over the adjoining space. Also, the access determines the use of the space, in this case there is only 1 door that is able to be controlled more easily when one needs to organize the space with its equipement and its movements.
The finishing of these elements are the following:
Multi-table( a set of tables specially designed) with a table top of sand colour with a thicknees of 18mm, and the structure with squared section profile (16mmx16mm), finished in EPL5 in brown earth color.
Stacking chairs with sand-colored thermo-polymer shell and 4-leg steel tube base, model FLEX SI1302 color PO6012.
This has all been meticulously carried out from our project in collaboration with the international leader in design, innovation and product development, Andreu World.
